An essay is a piece of writing that outlines an argument of the author. However the exact definition is not completely clear and it is often confused with definitions for a pamphlets, book, article or a short tale. Essays are usually grouped into informal and formal categories. Although essays belonging to the first category (formal) can be arguments that are based on evidence from science or research, or any other empirical facts however, they could also be personal statements. Personal essays, however are not able to carry the weight of an essay and are not nearly as valuable. Formal essays however must meet the requirements of the committee at the university and, often, are required to complete a degree.

The main difference between formal and personal essays is that they don’t need to include the thesis statement. The structure of such essays is determined by the nature of the argument. Expository essays are those that doesn’t have a supporting argument. Expository essays in formal form are written to answer an inquiry. They usually refer to research done and often link the research back to the argument.

Arguments that are formal are based on empirical research. Students must select a topic they can identify as significant and will be able to justify their argument by referring to other works. Students must follow the Aesthetic Theory (1947) guidelines to create a strong essay. The second step is to select the thesis. The thesis statement is a short outline of the essay’s topic. It should not be based on any other works published. For example, if you’re writing a research paper on dinosaurs, you might want to include some information about the Dinosaurs from the Cretaceous geological period. You can also reference Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of the Species If your subject is about alternative views of the origins of humankind.

The most important rule in argumentative essays is to present substantial primary data or evidence to answer questions. To support a claim, students should carefully examine primary sources. Students should stay clear of any form of plagiarism. They should be wary of quotes belonging to a different person or business as well as excerpts from newspapers and books that do not belong to them, unless they include citations and indicate the place where they were first published.

Narrative essays are written in either the first or third person. Students should be able to interpret events and their characters. Students should use resources such as diaries, newspapers and magazines to help them. Writers should not plagiarize other writers’ work without citing the source or proving the quotations are authentic. A lot of literary agents will not accept writings that are blatantly copied.

Argumentative essay styles include an analytical and expository style. Expository essays employ logic and structural arguments to support a specific thesis. It provides a comprehensive overview and history of the topic in expository form, the main points of the essay and the evidence that support it. Analytical essays, however depend on observation and literary techniques, such as analysing an argument or using specific examples. To fully grasp the topic, students should expect to read extensively.

The majority of essays have at least one bad point. To avoid mistakes in essays, students must be able recognize them. Poor grammar sentence structure, sentence structure, or weak communication skills are all signs of a bad point. All good points come with bad ones, and students must be aware. Therefore the aim is to learn how to balance good and bad points in order to achieve the desired effect.

Argumentative essays are composed to convince the reader to agree or disapprove of a particular point. The content of a good essay is written and articulate and based on well-written arguments. All facts and figures are presented to support the argument. However, students should be careful not to oversimplify any subject matter in their arguments. This can make their essay too easy to read and evaluate.
